Question 1

What is ear training?

Accepted Answer

Ear training is the practice of developing the ability to recognise musical elements — intervals, chords, scales and rhythms — purely by listening. It's a core skill for musicians who want to play by ear, improvise or transcribe.

Question 2

How do intervals work?

Accepted Answer

An interval is the distance between two pitches. A Perfect 5th (for example, C to G) sounds open and stable, while a Minor 2nd (C to Db) sounds tense and dissonant. Learning to identify intervals by ear is the first step in all ear training.

Question 3

Is this ear training app really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes — fully free, no account needed, no download, no paywall. Runs entirely in your browser on desktop and mobile.

Question 4

How does the Daily Challenge work?

Accepted Answer

Every day you get 10 interval-identification questions. The puzzle is identical for all players worldwide on any given date, so you can compare your score with friends. You can play it once per day — your streak grows with each consecutive day.

Question 5

Do I lose progress if I miss a day?

Accepted Answer

Your XP, level and achievements are permanent. Your streak resets if you miss a day, but all other progress stays with you. Progress is saved locally in your browser.

Question 6

What intervals are covered?

Accepted Answer

All 12 intervals from Minor 2nd to Octave — unlocked progressively across 3 tiers. Tier 1 starts with the easiest consonant intervals (P4, P5, M3, Octave). Tier 2 adds thirds and sixths. Tier 3 adds the dissonant ones (seconds, sevenths, tritone).

Question 7

What sound does the trainer use?

Accepted Answer

It uses Salamander acoustic grand piano samples, the same high-quality sampled piano used across playingmusic.online. The sound is warm and familiar, which helps train real-world pitch recognition.
