What is standard guitar tuning?

Standard guitar tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E, from the lowest (thickest) string to the highest (thinnest). This is the most common tuning and what almost all beginner lessons assume.

How often should I tune my guitar?

Tune every time you play. Guitars go out of tune from temperature changes, playing, and natural string stretch. New strings need extra tuning for the first week until they settle.

Why does my guitar go out of tune so fast?

New strings, temperature or humidity changes, a worn nut or bridge, or tuning pegs that slip are the most common causes. New strings need regular retuning for 1-2 weeks until fully stretched.

Can I tune a guitar without a tuner?

Yes — you can tune relative to yourself using the 5th fret method, or match to a reference pitch like a piano, tuning fork, or online tuner. Chromatic tuners are faster and more accurate.

What is a chromatic tuner?

A chromatic tuner detects any pitch and tells you what note it is and how far off (in cents) you are from the target pitch. It works for any instrument and any tuning.
