Do I have to follow tempo markings exactly?

In classical music, tempo markings are guidelines. Professional musicians interpret them with some freedom. However, beginners should use a metronome at the indicated BPM to develop accurate timing before adding expression.

What's the difference between Allegro and Allegretto?

Allegro means fast and lively (typically 120–168 BPM). Allegretto is a diminutive — slightly less fast and less forceful, typically 104–120 BPM. The '-etto' suffix in Italian means 'a little.'

Why are tempo markings in Italian?

During the Baroque period (1600–1750), Italy was the center of European music. Italian terminology became the international standard and has remained so ever since.

What does Moderato sound like?

Moderato (108–120 BPM) feels like a comfortable, unhurried walking pace — not too fast, not too slow, with a sense of forward motion.
