How often should I tune my kalimba?

Check tuning before every practice session. A well-made kalimba holds tune for days or weeks, but tines can drift with temperature changes, humidity, or transport.

Why does my kalimba go out of tune quickly?

Common causes: temperature or humidity changes, loose bridge screws, brand-new steel tines that have not settled, or a sharp impact while carrying it.

Can I use a guitar tuner for my kalimba?

Yes — any chromatic tuner works, including clip-on guitar tuners. Kalimba notes are standard pitches (C4, D4, E4, etc.).

What if I do not have the tuning hammer?

Any small hard metal object will work — the handle of a screwdriver, a coin, or a small rubber mallet. Tap very gently.

Should I tune up or tune down to the target note?

Tuning up generally holds better than tuning down, because it seats the tine firmly under the bridge. If a tine is sharp, loosen it past the target, then tune up.

Do I need to tune a new kalimba?

Most new kalimbas ship close to tuned but not perfectly. Plan to spend 10 minutes fine-tuning a new instrument on first unboxing, and again after 1-2 weeks once the tines settle.
