Question 1

How do I tune a mandolin online?

Accepted Answer

Click 'Start Tuning', allow microphone access, then pluck a string. The needle shows how many cents off you are — turn the tuning peg until the needle centers and turns green. Tune each string of the pair one at a time.

Question 2

What is standard mandolin tuning?

Accepted Answer

Standard mandolin tuning is G-D-A-E, from lowest to highest (G3-D4-A4-E5) — the same intervals as a violin. Each of the four courses has two strings tuned in unison.

Question 3

Does a mandolin use the same tuning as a violin?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the pitch of each course on a mandolin matches the violin exactly: G-D-A-E. This is why many fiddle tunes transfer directly between the two instruments.

Question 4

What is open-G mandolin tuning?

Accepted Answer

Open-G tuning sets the courses to G-D-G-B so that strumming open strings produces a G major chord. It is useful for Celtic, folk and bluegrass playing.
